Generative engine optimization

When someone asks an AI for a recommendation, is your business the answer?

Consumers increasingly skip the search results page and ask ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini directly: "who's the best dentist near Brickell?" The assistant answers with two or three names. Generative engine optimization — GEO — is the work of becoming one of them.

GEO vs. SEO, in one paragraph

Classic SEO targets a ranked page of links, so success is a position. A generative answer has no positions — it has mentions. The same question asked twice can return different businesses, and each assistant pulls from a different mix of sources. So GEO is measured statistically: ask the assistants hundreds of realistic customer questions, count how often each business gets named, and track which pages the assistants cite when they name someone else.

What AI assistants actually pull from

Directories and aggregators

Category directories, chamber listings and industry aggregators are the pages assistants quote most often for local recommendations. Being absent from the ones that get cited for your city and category is the single most common reason a business never gets named.

Reviews and third-party mentions

Assistants summarize what other people say about you. Consistent, recent, specific reviews and legitimate press or roundup mentions give a model something concrete to repeat.

Your own site

Clear service pages, a real address, plainly stated pricing or process, and pages that answer the questions people actually ask. Models reward pages they can quote in a sentence.

How a local business improves its AI visibility

  1. Measure a real baseline. Run a wide set of the questions your customers would actually type, across every major assistant, and record how often you are mentioned versus your competitors.
  2. Read the citations, not the vibes. On the questions where you lose, note which sources the assistant cited. Those pages are your work list, ordered by how often they show up.
  3. Close the presence gaps. Claim or correct the listings that get cited repeatedly for your city and category, with consistent name, address, phone and services.
  4. Publish quotable pages. Short, specific, factual pages about the services and questions that come up in the prompts you lose.
  5. Re-measure on a schedule. Answers drift. A fixed prompt set re-run regularly is the only way to tell a real gain from noise.

Common questions

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
GEO is the practice of making a business likely to be named inside an AI assistant's answer. Instead of competing for a ranked list of blue links, you are competing to be one of the two or three names an assistant mentions when someone asks it for a recommendation.
How is GEO different from SEO?
SEO optimizes for a results page you can see and measure with rank tracking. GEO optimizes for a generated answer that changes per question, per assistant and per user. The inputs overlap — directories, reviews, your own site — but the measurement is completely different: you track how often you get mentioned across many real questions, not where you sit on page one.
Is 'AI SEO' the same thing?
People use 'AI SEO' to mean the same idea: search engine optimization adapted for generative AI answers. It should not be confused with geographic or local SEO, although for a local business the two overlap heavily, because assistants lean on local sources when the question includes a city.
How long does GEO take to show results?
All three assistants retrieve live web results, so a fixed source page can influence answers within weeks of being indexed. Gemini tends to move first — it reads Google's index and your Google Business Profile directly. Claude responds quickly to citable content on your own website. ChatGPT usually takes longer — often three to six months — because its answers lean on directories, listings and review platforms, and those signals build gradually.
